Your smile and your health are both important to everyone at our practice. It’s one of the reasons we are big advocates of dental implants for our patients who are missing teeth. Implants are an invaluable service for a variety of reasons. This is something our own Dr. Lida Paez recently discussed with Mundo Hispanico.
If you have questions about implants, we have answers.
What Are Dental Implants?
Modern dental implants have been around since the 1960s, although innovations have made them even better. Implants act as prosthetic roots for replacement teeth. Implants are placed directly into your jawbone (which the roots of lost teeth once were) to provides support and stability for dental restorations.
Who Are Good Candidates For Dental Implants?
Pretty much anyone who is missing one tooth or multiple teeth is a good candidate for implants. By getting implants, your replacement teeth can feel and function practically as well as healthy, natural teeth. Research has found that patients with implants can generate enough force to eat a wide variety of food.
How Do Implants Help?
The roots help to anchor your teeth to your jaw. The roots also stimulate the jaw, so it makes new bone tissue. This keeps the jaw healthy and strong, too. Without implants, a bridge or dentures can fill the gap in your smile, but they don’t do anything to maintain your jaw health. By placing crowns, bridges, or dentures on implants, your jaw can stay strong. This also makes your replacement teeth more secure without the need for adhesives.
What Is The Process For Getting Implants?
The first step is a consultation with one of our doctors. We will examine your mouth and assess your situation. If you have been missing teeth for a while or living with loose-fitting dentures, you may have lost some bone density. If so, we may recommend a bone graft to rebuild your jawbone before placing your implants.
You also should know that we have invested in equipment to perform a CT Scan prior to placing your implants. This gives us a three-dimensional perspective of your jaw. This allows us to perform a more thorough evaluation. It’s also invaluable when planning where to place your implants, so you get the maximum benefit from each one.
On the day of your implants placement procedure, we provide dental sedation to keep you pain-free. You will need a little time to recover and for your jaw to heal. When you are ready, we’ll attach your crown, bridge, or dentures. Then, you can smile, speak, and eat as well as anyone with a full set of natural, healthy teeth.
